Fundraiser for historic Wally’s Cafe Jazz Club surpasses goal in a week

For years, Frank Poindexter has had a dream for Wally’s Café Jazz Club: to have a space for students to learn and practice jazz. But the café has now been closed for about three months, and the family sought financial support via GoFundMe after dozens of people from the community reached out asking how they could help.

Wally’s surpassed its GoFundMe goal of $30,000 in less than a week. This money will help the jazz club recover from the pandemic, as well as develop the initiative called “The Student to Student Music Café” and a production facility.

“That support just shows me that our service and our longevity in the community over 73 years must have some value,” said Poindexter, general manager of Wally’s and son of owner Elynor Walcott.
